Žižka Hat

Description

Simple beanie with double folded bouclé brim and slipped stitch pattern that makes knitting fast and interesting.

Jan Žižka was a medieval Czech military leader. Why name a hat after him, you ask? From schoolbook portraits, I remember him in a thick, shearling cap, and when I first tried this hat on in the mirror, the very first thing that popped into my head was: “Žižka.”

And the name stuck.

This hat has a twice-folded brim in bouclé yarn that creates a cozy, “shearling” effect and keeps ears warm. The body is worked double-stranded Alpaca 2 with an optional fine sparkle thread for a snowy dusting effect.

Note: The hat circumference should be 3–5 cm (1.2–2 in) smaller than the head circumference. photos show Size 2 on a 55 cm (21.7 in) head.

Gauge

19 sts & 50 rnds = 10 × 10 cm / 4 × 4 in in Body pattern (Rnds 1–10, Color B held double with Color C held single) on 3.5 mm (US 4) needles in the round, washed and blocked.

Needles

• 3.00 mm (US 2.5) circular, 40 cm (16 in) cable, for picking up the stitch before folding the brim
• 3.25 mm (US 3) circular, 40 cm (16 in) cable, for the brim
• 3.50 mm (US 4) circular, 40–100 cm (16–40 in) cable, or DPNs, for the upper body and crown shaping

• 108 (116, 123) m / 118 (127, 135) yd / 31 (33, 35) g sport-weight yarn in Color A
• 195 (210, 225) m / 213 (230, 246) yd / 39 (42, 45) g light-fingering yarn in Color B (held double)
